Daniela starts against Luisa Stefani of Brazil who's a qualifier ranked 699. This is a match that Daniela should win but you never know.
The winner plays either top seed Kayla Day or Danielle Lao.

It's a Daniela double bagel!

To be perfectly honest, this a little bittersweet, since Dani only did this one other time and I was there to see it. Part of me wanted it to always remain that way.
Yet other parts of me are daring to get a bit excited. This is two thrashings she's handed out in 10 days, and even if one was against a cripple and the other against a raw rookie, they're still blowout wins as in days of yore.
This took 59 minutes. Daniela won 86% of 1st serve in points, 58 of the 87 points played, and had only one double fault. At 4-0 in the 2nd, she did flirt with losing her serve after being up 40-0, fending off the only two break points she faced in the match and getting the game.

Dani's match with #1 seed Kayla Day is the second on court 1, not earlier than 11:30 AM Pacific Standard Time.

If Luisa Stefani is any relation of Gwen, she might receive a consoling tweet from Blake Shelton.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Can't complain about a double bagel. A really good quick win by Daniela although Stefani is someone Daniela should beat really easily, she still had to go out and do it. I think Daniela likes bagels in San Diego.

Day will be a much tougher opponent. She's the number 2 ranked Junior in the world - she was ranked 1 - and she's the junior US Open champion. She's also the top seed here and has had some good wins already. She beat Flipkens in New Haven qualifying after Flipkens beat Daniela and she also beat Broady & Sevastova there and they both had good US Opens. Day won the $50,000 ITF in Macon in October although she lost to Van Uytvanck in the LAs Vegas ITF and Daniela beat Van Uytvanck in Luxembourg. Day lost to Petkovic 6-3 6-2 at the Australian Open and to eventual winner Maria in the Midland quarter-finals and these are her most recent tournaments. It won't be an easy match but Daniela comes in with momentum from her recent wins.

Daniela lost to Day in straight sets. She was 5-2 up in the first set winning 4 games in a row but couldn't clinch it and Day came back to 5-5.

It's disappointing because Daniela had a lead in the first set and if she'd won it she'd have had a good chance to win the match but after her good start she only won 2 out of the last 13 games. Day seemed to win every BP she had while Daniela hardly won any. She was 2/12 in the match and 0/7 in the second set while Day was 2/3 on BPs in both sets. A big factor in the match was second serve as first serve winning percentage was almost identical at 61.5% for Daniela & 61.2% for Day but Day won 54.3% of 2nd serve points while Daniela only won 37.5% and she only won 1/6 2nd serve points in the second set while Day won 6/12 on her second serve in the second set. A few points going Daniela's way would have made such a difference and Daniela actually won more points in the first set (45 to 44) but she didn't win the last point and the second set was fairly lopsided although Daniela had chances there.

I think that Daniela would have had a good chance against pretty much anyone else in the draw but Day is one of the the top juniors, the top seed here and she's likely to be one of the top players in a few years so it was always going to be a tough match and so it was.

Add to that solid analysis, Chungwit, is that at 5-4 in the first, Daniela had 2 set points.
A couple of years ago I did some in-depth stat checking on our gal, and memory tells me that the ITF wins Dani compiled in her very young days count toward her career total. So yesterday was #563. And in the last 11 days, she's shown me that 600 is not yet out of the question.

Let's Go, Daniela!
