Daniela starts with 12th seed Elian Svitolina which will be difficult as Daniela's not beaten anyone as good as Svitolina for a long time while Svitolina has played well this year and she thrashed Daniela in Madrid. Daniela will have to have a great match and have everything go her way while Svitolina has to have an off day. The winner plays Zheng Saisai or Varvara Leppchenko. |

Daniela's also playing doubles with Roberta Vinci & they start against Julia Goerges & Karolina Pliskova. Winner plays either eighth seeds Chuang/Hsieh or Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja. As partners go Vinci's a good one and we'll see if this is a one-off or the start of a longer term partnership but it shows that top players still want to play with Daniela. Maybe we'll see Daniela concentrate more on doubles. |

It would have been a big upset if Daniela had beaten Svitolina and unfortunately it wasn't to be. The match was more competitive than it was in Madrid but Svitolina was controlling the match. She hit 22 winners compared to Daniela's 14 while she only made 17 errors while Daniela made 31 UEs. Svitolina also won 80% of her first serve points and 57% of her second serve points compared to 65% & 40% for Daniela. These serving figures can be enough to win a match but not against someone who's serving as well as Svitolina. Daniela also saved 10/13 Bps otherwise Svitolina could have won more easily. Daniela gave it her best and fought like she always does. We'll see what Daniela does in doubles, she's got a good partner and a decent draw so we'll so what happens there. Getting some wins and having a good run and having fun there would be such a boost for her. |

I'm sure Daniela's game is improving. It's sucks she lost again in the first round but she's had two very tough opponents the last two tourneys and she kept them close. Beijing qualilies hopefully and then maybe one or two indoor tourneys. Hopefully she can have a good run in one if them so she ends the year in top 70... |

If I get some time, I'll check into the last couple of years of the records of Flavia and Vinci and see if they had any long Why Don't You Quit Now droughts like Daniela is stuck in these days. I recall Vinci having a bad stretch in singles not so long ago. We know what they did in New York. They pressed on through rough times. We know Dani can do that. The hopefully inVincible doubles team is up 4th and last on Court 4, with 3 doubles matches before them. Play starts 11:00 AM Wuhan time. |

Pennetta was ranked in the 90s and hardly won a match in 2013 before she had a dramatic upsurge in results. |

Daniela just can't buy a win at the moment. She & Vinci had a set point in the first set at 5-4 deuce when they served for the set and they were also 7-6 up in the Supertiebreak before losing the last four points of the match. This is tough to take and it would have been lovely for Daniela to get a win because it's been so long since she's had one. Hopefully Daniela can play with Vinci in Beijing because they could be a really good team. I doubt they'd be playing together here unless they're going to play next week but we'll see what happens. |
