Draw is out. Daniela starts with Belinda Bencic. The winner plays Casey Dellacqua in the second round.

Although Bencic had a great tournament last week beating Wozniacki I think this is a good draw for Daniela. Dellacqua in 2nd round is one of the weakest seeds and hasn't played well for a while and has been injured. I like Daniela's chances for a 3rd round here.

It's better than Indian Wells. Daniela handled Bencic in straight sets on her way to the Birmingham title last year (isn't it nice that Dani is the reigning champion in two events :) ). Bencic was 2-5 this year before Indian Wells. Yeah, that proved not to matter against Kuklafranandollie 2 weeks ago, but she somehow has Dani's number. Some hope here for our gal to advance further than she did last year and pick up some points. I do realize that Daniela hasn't done much in Miami since, well, ever (just once has she won more than once there, in 2010, and is 10-15 there lifetime), but I'll cross fingers and hope she does well.

Yeah, you're right. Dani didn't win much of anything last year. Birmingham just still seems to me like it was 2 days ago. So she's not reigning champion in 2 events, and the win over Bencic was 2 years ago. But she's forever a reigning champ in our hearts!

Bencic really hadn't had much form this year until Indian Wells where she had a good run beating Wozniacki along the way, although Wozniacki may have been a bit tired after Kuala Lumpur, and there were quite a few players who had done nothing this year who played well at Indian Wells. It helps that Daniela had a convincing win over Bencic last year although it was on grass. Bencic is one of the best young players and she seems to be coming into some form so this will be a tough opener. I'm sure Daniela will have done everything to be ready for it.

The weird thing is that Bencic is ranked higher than Dellacqua yet Dellacqua's seeded. I don't understand why Miami doesn't do the draw on Monday with the latest ranking rather than on Sunday and disregard what has happened in Indian Wells.

The last time Daniela was reigning champion in two event was from October 2007 - March 2008 when she was Indian Wells and Linz champion.

Haha, sorry to be so padantic Alex! Daniela beat Bencic last year in the 2nd round at Birmingham. But Daniela beat Vekic in the final 2013. Easy to get Bencic and Vekic mixed up!

The good thing is that Daniela has beaten Bencic, Vekic and Diyas, all young stars in waiting that often thrash older players. And it's also a good thing that there's reason to believe she still has the ability to beat a player like that even when said player is coming off a strong run in the previous tourney.

Daniela & Karin play Alexandra Dulgheru & Simona Halep in doubles. The winner plays either no.2 seeds Makarova & Vesnina or Krajicek & Zahlavova Strycova. MDD.jpg

Just tuned in... she is down 1-4

Let's see how this goes...

Lost the first set 6-1. Bencic is playing very well and missing very little, Daniela is the opposite. I do not see her turning this around if her game does not click; she seems sluggish and frustrated.

3bp to start the set, and 2 horrible misses and one good serve by Bencic... Another bp, another long ball. Her tennis just isn't there.
Breaks!!! After 8 or so bp... keep going, Daniela!

The streaming switched to Watson's match, sadly.
