Roger has spoiled us,he really has. He won 10+ titles 3 years in a row (2004-2006),and has won 3 slams in a year on 3 different occasions. It's simply incredible,when you consider in Sampras best year (1994) he won 10 titles,and never won 3 slams in a year.

By most standards,Rafa's 2008 goes down as an amazing achievement(2 slams,Olympic gold and 3 MS titles),yet it somehow feeels inferior to Rogers best years.

It's worth noting,to back up Mats point, that Rafa has had to beat Fed in every one of his Grand Slam triumphs. Fed has not had to beat Rafa in his last 3 Grand Slam wins-the last one was Wimbledon 2007.

^well the last fact just support my view that Federer is so much more consistent. He gets to the final everytime, Nadal crashes out earlier.

When Don Budge won the grand slam in 1938, Fred Perry had left the circuit and when Rod Laver won his first grand slam in 1962 a lot of the top players of the time like Ken Rosewall, Hoad and Gonzalez were on the pro circuit. Rosewall beat Laver most of the time they played in 1963 (34-12 Rosewall) and beat Laver in the US & French pro championships. I know that Laver won the grand slam in 1969, which was the first full year of the Open era, but you never come come across anyone who says that Laver's 1962 slam was achieved against a weak field, people just say that he won two grand slams.

It's not Federer's fault that Nadal lost earlier in the tournament. In a slam there are 128 players and you have to win 7 matches to win. If a rival enters but loses earlier in the tournament, then that's beyond your control, you can only beat who's in front of you and win the next match. This was Federer's 20th consecutive slam semi-final, the next best streak was Lendl's 10 and Nadal's streak was stopped at 5. Consistently putting yourself in a position to win is a mark of excellence.

What I would say is that Federer's previous futility at Roland Garros shows is how incredible Nadal is on clay.

I think that Mats and Roger have musical differences. Mats like Bob Dylan while Roger likes Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani.


Federer's results have gotten better since Gavin Rossdale stopped coming. Probably spent too much time using his racquet as a guitar.

Mats talks Bob:
I'm a big Bob Dylan fan and I just wanna see him, I don't need to hear him. I've seen him about ten times now. He was more predictable in Gothenberg so some people might say that's better but to me, it's not. I prefer when he fucks up. You know, when he picks up the wrong harmonica and starts blowing randomly and then tosses it away in the middle of a song. I love that!

Could it be said that he has realised what we all aspire to, ie to be good enough to be allowed to be a grumpy old man whenever, wherever?
[Muses on that for a moment] Well, he's an artist. To me the difference between the Stones and Dylan these days is that the Stones aren't artists any more. They're just musicians, or performers like me.

I'm not doing the same thing Roger Federer is, am I? He's a true competitor, whereas I'm more of an entertainer than anything else now. I nearly couldn't care less if I win or lose any more - it doesn't make me a better or worse player, it doesn't do anything for my confidence, there's rarely even any prize money at stake. Whereas with guys like Dylan or Neil Young, they just go out there and say "fuck off".

Exactly, what we all aspire to ...
Their attitude is "I'm doing what I want, if you want to come and see, fine, if you don't, that's fine too". They're not promising anything but what they are trying to do, even at the age of 65, is to keep creating. I really admire that.

No. 1 Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal won't play in Wimbledon this year as he continues to battle knee soreness.

"I'm better than I was a few weeks ago, and I just don't feel ready," he said in Spanish Friday at a news conference.

Nadal dropped his third straight match Friday, an exhibition loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in London.

"I don't feel 100 percent to play in two weeks," he said.

Nadal also lost an exhibition Thursday to Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets in the world No. 1's first match since falling to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the French Open.

Nadal has struggled with knee problems for months and missed last year's Davis Cup final after he was diagnosed with tendinitis in November.

Nadal is out of Wimbledon. As are Monfils and Baghdatis. Qualifying has finished so I don't think the seeds will be re-shuffled, which is a shame because without Nadal in the original draw the draw would have looked very different, with Federer as top seed and Murray as the number two seed.
Baghdatis has been replaced by Slovakian Karol Beck, and Monfils was replaced by Hass as a seed, and then the next highest ranked player or a lucky loser (I think). Just waiting to see who takes the place of Nadal...
Ivan Ljubicic twisted his ankle during his match against Fabrice Santoro in Eastbourne this week and he too is a doubt for The Championships.

No Rafa and no Nalby. I'm depressed before this Wimbledon even starts. Its Marats last dance here as well. Hope he goes out in style.

off topic but related with murray.
as i know scotts and brits are totally different people with their own governemet,flag,national anthem ,culture etc..
but why they say the british No 1?all this murray-mania in england is unbelievable

Danielitsa,you're confusing British and English. Great Britain refers to the United Kingdom of England,Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland. Therefore,Andy Murray is definitely British,but woe betide anyone who calls him English! :lol:
