Nadal gave Roddick an absolute beasting. The match was in a bullring and one was the matador and the other was the bull. It was a good tie with a really good match between Ferrer & Roddick and Querrey gave Nadal problems before Nadal came through. Home and surface advantage helped Spain.

Impressive wins by Del Potro to give Argentina the win against Russia in another close tie.

The tie's going to be in Argentina, so they'd be as well to play on a fast hardcourt as that's a good surface for Del Potro & Nalbandian while it's Nadal's weakest surface. Another factor could be fatique as Nadal's going to be at the tour championships and Ferrer's likely to be there while Del Potro's the only Argentinian that's got a chance to be there and he's 10th in the race right now. Nadal ruled out skipping the tour championship to concentrate on Davis Cup, saying he'll do both, Ferrer needs to defend his points from last year's tour championship while the Argentinians are either going to miss out or could just skip it to prepare for the Davis Cup.

He is unsure whether he is going to return at all. I wouldn't be surprised if he just plays one of the Masters events (Madrid or Paris) and then goes to Shanghai.
He is scheduled to play both Masters events, Basel and Shanghai but I very much doubt he will play all four now. The illness at the start of the year has taken its toll. He is constantly quoted saying he wants to return to number 1 so I think he just wants to rest and prepare well for next season.

ATP - ROGER WITHDRAWS FROM STOCKHOLM

Roger announced today that he will not be participating in the Stockholm Open which starts next Monday.

"2008 has been a tough year for me as I was always playing catch up after being diagnosed with mononucleosis at the beginning of the year. I feel fortunate to be healthy again, but I want to remain at the top of the game for many more years to come and go after the #1 ranking again. In order to do that, I need to get a proper rest and get strong again so that I am 100% fit for the remainder of the year or next year. At this point, I am not sure when I will be ready to play again, but I hope to be back at some point before the end of the year. I apologize to the tennis fans in Sweden as I was looking forward to playing in Stockholm again. The country has produced so many incredible tennis players and the tournament has such a great history. I hope to be able to come back at some point in the future."

AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships

Singles - Final

[9] T Berdych (CZE) d [5] J Del Potro (ARG) 61 64

A bit of a surprise for me. Especially that the result so clear.

Former top-10 player Joachim Johansson will return to action next week at the "If Stockholm Open" after retiring from tennis in February due to a persistant shoulder injury. He plans to play some more tournaments at the start of next year, and will play a full schedule from mid-2009.
The wildcard faces Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the opening round in Stockholm.

Impressive tournament by Berdych, as he beat a lot of good players to win it.
Del Potro had had a dodgy blowfish or something, upset tummy during the match.
