The ATP rankings are based on the previous 52 weeks so last year's points from Montreal are still being counted with this year's Toronto points, it said someplace.

I think it's almost inevitable that Nadal will get to number one as Federer has so many more points to defend for the rest of the year. Nadal is in exceptional form right now and has been the best player this year and would thoroughly deserve the top ranking, it'll have been worth the wait. Federer hasn't been playing as well year and he's been losing matches that in past years he'd have won although he is still 2nd in the race. A bad year for Federer would be a career year for pretty much anyone else which shows how great his play has been in recent years.

It wasn't too long ago that Nadal was having to beat Djokovic to stay at number two.

Yeah I also think that Rafa would deserve to to be number 1 at the moment. He is the best player in 2008.

Federer is having huge problems against Ginepri in Cincinatti
current score: 6-7(2) 5-6
Ginepri had breakpoint, linesman called his shot out, umpire overruled, Federer challenged and Hawk Eye said it was good..
Ginepri serving for the victory

it was painful to watch that match IMO. Federer looked like he was ready to give up during the first two sets.

It was a match that Federer should have won in straight sets as he was twice up a break in the first but dropped serve the next game and played appallingly in the tiebreak, while he couldn't convert the BPs he had in the second, well not till the last one and won the tiebreak and breezed through the third as Ginepri's health and fitness went. Ginepri played well in the first two sets and hit some great shots and was tenacious but he started to look unwell near the end of the second set and you knew he had to win in straight sets because he wouldn't be able to maintain his level and that's what happened.

That would have been incredible, if Roger lost another time in the first round. That was a really tough match for him. I'm already curious about the next round and if he is able to improve.

Andy Roddick hurt himself in bed. I'd like to comment further but I don't want him going Max Mosley on me.

Nadal really destroyed Serra in the 2nd round of Cincinnati. Only 46 minutes for a 6:0 6:1
Really impressive.

I just cant wrap my head round it, realistically we all knew that one day Federer would be caught but dont suppose we ever knew how it would happen or how we'd react. Federer must of lost his number 1 ranking along with that match as he was the defending champion for this event. Lets see if Nadal can clinch the top spot in mens tennis

   The longest streak at number one looks like it's coming to an end.

Federer actually played fairly well but Karlovic has that huge serve and that gives him the chance to beat anyone as he can always get the set to the tiebreak and it comes down to one or two points and this time he got lucky or Federer got unlucky.

It's going to be interesting to see how Federer reacts to this and also the reaction to it. He's slumping this year although he's still second in the race and his play from 2004-2007 was arguably the most dominating of the Open era. Sampras lost the number 1 spot often enough in the 90s but regained it while Agassi was number one and winning slams well into his thirties so Federer is far, far from finished especially with the talent he has. Having said that, the aura of invincibility has gone and many more players are going to believe they can beat him.

i wonder if Federer wants to play that long like Agassi , he was number one for years, now he gets defeated a lot . I have the willing he will keep trying to get that slam record of Sampras, maybe Roland Garros (wich is almost impossible with this form vs Nadal) and then he retires.
If he doesn't win the Olympics, i don't think he will win the US Open, it will be hard for him then, he's talking about gold the whole season...

Now the way to the number 1 spot is open for Rafa. He has all chances now.

But you are right. I think more and more players now believe in there chances to win against Roger. The myth of invincibility is gone.

very truth.same story with kohlschreiber.annoys me this kind of game.

nadal is the new No 1.deservly.until now is the most consistent player this year.
at my opinion nadal's biggest weapon is the few ue's.has very much patience
in his game.
i dont think federer is over.he just have a bad season, everything is going
bad for him.i think next year will be more motivated, and will regain the 1 spot.
djokovic didnt played well yesterday, nice match moya-murray
