WILD CARD ANNOUNCEMENT
Carlsbad, CA
by MVT PR | 12.07.2012

Former world No. 5 Daniela Hantuchova and 2012 NCAA Champion Nicole Gibbs have received wildcards into the Mercury Insurance Open presented by Tri-City Medical Center, a Premier WTA tennis tournament which is also part of the summer’s Emirates Airline US Open Series to be held July 14 – 22, 2012 at La Costa Resort and Spa, it was announced today by Steve Simon, tournament director.

Hantuchova, from Slovakia, reached a career-high ranking of No. 5 in the world in 2003 after reaching three straight Grand Slam quarterfinals at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. “Daniela Hantuchova and Nicole Gibbs are two great additions to the Mercury Insurance Open,” said Simon. “Daniela is a WTA veteran and perennial fan favorite while Nicole is just breaking into the upper echelons of the women’s game and is a local resident for our fans from Southern California. We’re looking forward to seeing both players in action next week.”

Some slightly good news in that Kerber has qualified for Istanbul. She was highest ranked among players qualified for Sofia, with Daniela at #9, so she'll move up a slot. And even another, as Sara Errani, who was 2nd highest, has also qualified for Istanbul. As many of you know, the top 6 on that list get in, then 2 wild cards are handed out. We can hope Dani picks up some match wins in the next couple of weeks to enhance her chances to be in the top 6. Frankly, if her new/old coaches are getting her going, as so far it appears, the field for Linz is nowhere near as imposing as Tokyo or Beijing. If you believe in the Lion King's Circle of Life, well, Daniela won at Indian Wells in 2002 and then 5 years later. She then won at Linz, her only multiple win season to date. It's 5 years later, and she has a win this year. Why not?

Let's Go, Daniela!

Hantuchova, in 2009 cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, was one of 10 bodies chosen last July by The Body follows the publication of the magazine to pose nude for ESPN, which is not affected his relationship with the Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia.

Although his career highlights two wins in singles at Indian Wells (2002 and 2007), tournaments that are part of the WTA Premier, his great career has been based on the mixed doubles, where he has been champion of the four Grand Slams: Wimbledon 2001, next to Leo? Daniela won a doubles match! Maybe she's found the right partner in Ms. Martic. What she does play next, I gather, is Georges, then 2nd round doubles...ummm...do any of us remember what that is? :o ... vs. #4 seeds Dushevina/Rosolska. Not too keen on Dani drawing Julia; keep our fingers crossed, it would be a really good sign if she can win this one. I suppose this is where we should post our thoughts on Daniela's matches until Chungwit resurfaces. You never really appreciate what one person can do until that person stops doing it for awhile. You are truly missed, Chungwit!

Hantuchova & Hlavackova will be at exhibitión of Federer & Tsonga in Bogotá
Efe | Posted on November 15, 2012

Daniela Hantuchova, who won two editions of the Indian Wells Masters and currently number 20 in the world, and the Czech Andrea Hlavackova, silver medal in doubles at the London Olympics, will be on display from Roger Federer and Jo Wilfried Tsonga December 15 in Bogotá.

The event's organizers said Thursday that also confirmed the Colombian Alejandro Falla and Santiago Giraldo, who will partner with international guests in the game prior to substantive promise.

The players arrive in Bogota on December 14, and shortly before the exhibition game will offer a tennis clinic with about a thousand attendees, especially children.

Games will be played at the Coliseum El Campin and 13,200 spectators are expected.

The proceeds will go to the Roger Federer Foundation, which works with children as another entity of the same nature in the Colombian city of Manizales, the organization said.

Shorter tennis season means more time for exhibitions
Douglas Robson, Special for USA TODAY

But Tipsarevic won't be putting his feet up for long.

In less than two weeks, he will jet to Singapore to partake in an exhibition dubbed "The Clash of Continents" offering $520,000 in prize money with Japan's Kei Nishikori, Argentina's Juan Monaco and the USA's Sam Querrey -- plus a "special match involving glamour girls Daniela Hantuchova and Peng Shuai," according to the event's marketing material.

Perhaps the busiest of all is Roger Federer, who is competing in six sold-out exos between Dec. 6-15 in Brazil, Argentina and Colombia, a tour largely backed by one of his sponsors, Gillette.

"That's the beauty of an offseason," said Federer after losing to Djokovic on Monday night in London, "you're allowed to do whatever the hell you want."

With payouts often exceeding regular tour stops in prize money, exhibitions are a lucrative no-brainer, especially in a sport where athletes are individual contractors without guaranteed salaries.

Daniela Hantuchova back to Tennyson for Brisbane International

THE Brisbane International has attracted even more international sparkle following the addition of 2012 runner-up Daniela Hantuchova to a dazzling women's line-up.

Hantuchova, a former top-five player now ranked No.32, has not missed the Brisbane event since its inaugural year in 2009, and she could not resist a crack at a share of the women's prizemoney which has jumped from $655,000 in 2012 to $1 million.

The tournament had already having secured the commitment of the world's top three players Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams.

Eight of the world's top 10 women will play at the Queensland Tennis Centre where the top three will be joined by Germany's world No.5 Angelique Kerber, Italian Sara Errani (No.6), 2011 Brisbane champion Petra Kvitova (No.8), Australia's top player Samantha Stosur (No.9) and former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki (No.10).

Hantuchova will be aiming to go one better than her last visit to Pat Rafter Arena in January when she reached the final.

On that occasion she ran into a red-hot Kaia Kanepi who disposed of her in straight sets.

Hantuchova, 29, plans to add the finishing touches to her pre-season campaign at the Sunshine Coast where the world No.32 will play an exhibition match at Palmer Coolum Resort against Australian Jarmila Gajdosova on December 22.
