From her official website today:

"Daniela withdraws from Istanbul

Daniela will not play at Istanbul next week (19-25 may 2008).

« I am very disappointed about not being able to play in Istanbul. This is a tournament that is so loved by the players. I had looked forward to coming to Istanbul and preparing for Roland-Garros.

In fact, throughout my recovery I had focused on Istanbul as the place to get to. Unfortunately, I found out yesterday that I still have some healing to do.

This is the life of an athlete. You have to work through these things. I will do my best to get back on the court as soon as possible so that I can return to Istanbul in 2009 ! Good luck to the tournament organizers and lots of love to all the fans in Turkey ! » said Daniela to her official website."

That's disappointing. It was a good chance to begin to make up some of the ground she has lost with the injury and the prior illness. Counting Antwerp, that now makes six tournaments this year she will have had to withdraw from. I still cannot possibly fathom the possibility of her missing a grand slam, but I suppose that possibility still exists, though small.

Such a shame to see Daniela miss yet another tournament, but if she is still injured then its much better to miss it that to risk it. Hope that she can have enough time to prepare for Roland Garros, if she is 100% to compete

I am glad she withdrew from Istanbul. Now don't rush back only because RG is a slam, health is much more important. Actually I somewhat hope she skips Paris and comes back on grass. This heel issue has been bothering her for such a long time that its healing really must be addressed with all seriousness. She must choose wisely when to come back because this might be a career ending injury if she isn't careful.

The important thing is that Daniela comes back when she's completely recovered and that she takes the time she needs to recuperate. I agree with what Martin says about Roland Garros. It is a slam but Daniela won't loss too many points by sitting it out and there is absolutely no point in coming back too soon and aggravating the injury and missing Wimbledon where she has more points to defend and also the hardcourt season where she can gain a lot of points. I think the earliest time to return would be Rosmalen, as she can have a warmup before Wimbledon but she can, and should, withdraw if she doesn't feel 100%. She's got to think about the rest of the year and the years to come rather than just the next few tournaments. I'm sure Daniela will be getting the appropriate medical advice and make the right decision.

I hope she will be ready for RG. But if not, it would be better to skip it and focus on grass season. This is Daniela's favourite surface and she should be 100% fit.

im not surprised, or disapointed, that she withdrew. i hope she is fully recovered for RG, i wouldnt want her to miss a Grand Slam

im not sure about you, but i think that if daniela is all healed up for RG but isnt 100% sure she wants to play that maybe she could consider only playing doubles. thats just my opinion, i think it would be good to get a tiny bit of play in atleast.

and if she does miss RG, well she will have an awsome point opportunity next year!! :D

Daniela : « I hope to play at Roland-Garros »

« Coming off of Miami and then a match in Amelia Island, all my doctors were shocked that I was able to play through at both events. As you all know, with much disappointment I had to pull from Fed Cup and three Tour events. It has been a very frustrating time to tell you the truth. So here we are… the foot is continuing to be problematic. It was a very bad injury. I had an MRI early last week which confirmed the foot needed more time to heal. Right now I am trying to stay hopeful for Paris. I miss the game so much and Roland Garros is wonderful. And what's not to love about Paris !

If I am able to play, I realize that I will not be prepared as I would like typically moving into a Grand Slam. All I can do is play my best, considering the circumstances, and expect to have a positive experience regardless of the outcome. »

She isn't playing at Roland Garros...from her website:

« A near heartbreaking day for me... After final consult with my team, I am sad to announce that I will be missing my first Roland Garros as a professional athlete. Every player’s dream is to compete in the Grand Slams and I so much wanted to make Paris happen.

But I know I have to be patient as recovery from this type of injury takes time. Hopefully I will be strong and healthy to practice and play in full speed soon. I wish everyone all the best, lots of good tennis, and much love to all the fans! »

Think it was the best decision...get well soon Dani :|

I'm happy to read this.
Of course every player wants to participate at a Grand Slam, but it's actually only a tournament and the world won't stop going round because she misses RG 8-)

These are good news considering the fact that I was concerned that she would make a decision based on her will and not in reasoning.
Hope she comes back soon, stronger and with vengence to make up for lost time.

But this will be the longest and most boring RG for a long time as far as I´m concerned :help:
