Serena's the best in history - and she's getting better

Before this tournament started I said Serena Williams was the player to beat in the women's draw and it is still true. For me she is the greatest female player ever and she just keeps getting better.

I have a lot of admiration for Serena and what she has achieved. Her record here in Melbourne - 17 grand slams in total, including five Australian Opens - tells you a lot about how consistent she has been over a long period of time. That is very hard to accomplish in sport.

The fact that Serena keeps improving shows how motivated she is. Like her, I am one of the older players on the tour and I have played her a lot over the years since we were first breaking through as teenagers, and often at grand slams.

I am absolutely convinced that she is a better player and a better athlete than she was when she first started winning major titles, even though she is now 32.

Tennis keeps moving forward all the time, with new players coming through, new coaching techniques and developments in fitness and sports science. That means that you have to keep finding ways to stay ahead and Serena and her team have done a great job of that.

There is no question that the sport itself has become harder than it was when we both first started playing, but Serena has always kept pace with the changes and the younger players.

She inspires me because I think it shows that players keep evolving and can reach their peak much later in their careers. More and more these days you see players in our age group still being competitive at the top level. I know people will argue that players, including Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Margaret Court and Billie Jean King, should be ranked ahead of Serena in an all-time greats list. They certainly are all champions, but they did not have to contend with the same strength and depth in women's tennis that exists today.

Serena does not get to coast through early rounds of grand slams, which is what used to happen for the top players, and while she does not always play at her best every round or on every point, she knows just when to step it up at pressure moments.

People asked me after I lost to Serena on Friday what it is that makes her so difficult to play. One of the biggest things is her competitiveness - just when you think you have her in a vulnerable position, she comes back at you stronger than before. That's tough to cope with mentally when it happens over and over again.

Technically, her game has a lot of strengths but it is her serve which I would say is the outstanding shot. She serves better than any woman I have ever played against and her second serve also wins her a lot of points. It also puts a lot of pressure on you as her opponent, because you have to keep winning your service games, otherwise the scoreline can get away from you quite quickly.

That's why she has won so many matches here in Melbourne and around the world. It's why she'll keep winning matches this week.

Eugenie Bouchard and Li Na in Australian Open battle of the generations

The women's tournament at this year's Australian Open has already given us some interesting battles between youth and experience. I know from my own career that there are advantages to both.

Like Eugenie Bouchard, who takes on Li Na in the semi-finals on Thursday, I had some big breakthroughs when I was still a teenager. I won my first tournament in Indian Wells aged 18 and then reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and the US Open that same year.

At that age, you are quite fearless and you can go for it because you don't necessarily think about how much is on the line. You live in the moment and you can get swept along. It's an incredible feeling and so exciting, but it's easy to get overwhelmed as well.

Bouchard is used to having a lot of attention around her, and I was a kind of used to being in the public eye a lot myself by the time I broke through. That definitely helps because there are a lot of things to deal with off the court when you do really well at a major event.

Suddenly the media and everyone else is very focused on what you are doing and you have to learn to manage all that and keep your mind on what you have to do on the court. The matches keep getting tougher and you need to be mentally fresh for every challenge.

Bouchard has a big challenge on her hands in playing Li who is the only grand slam champion left in the competition. Li is at the other end of the scale to Bouchard in terms of her experience and she really loves playing in Australia.

She is a former finalist here and when you have played well at a tournament before it can make a big difference. You feel comfortable in your surroundings and it feels familiar and natural to be playing well at this stage of the tournament. It can be just as valuable as being young and fresh. It's kind of a battle of the generations.

My fellow Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova is having a fantastic tournament and I expect her to play well against Agnieszka Radwanska in the other women's semi-final on Thursday. The women's draw is very open and it will come down to who gets the details right on and off the court.

A lot of big names have gone out of this Australian Open but I think it's fantastic for women's tennis to have such a mix of personalities and age groups all playing well. All of the girls left in the draw have their own characters and styles of play and they are from different nations and regions as well, which attracts more fans to the sport and to the Australian Open. Everyone has someone to cheer for.

However long you have been around you can always keep learning and I have really enjoyed getting the chance to try some commentary for Channel Seven this week. The commentary box has an amazing view at court level and it's a good challenge to analyse a match and try to describe it in a way non-tennis players will understand. It's definitely something I would like to do more of when I stop playing, but for now it's fun when I have the time.

Two attacking players ready to fight out Australian Open final

The Australian Open final between Li Na and Dominika Cibulkova is probably not the one that many people would have predicted before the tournament, but to me it's not that surprising to see these two playing for the title.

Obviously Li Na is a fantastic player and especially here, where she's been in the final twice before. She's also a grand slam champion and she was always going to be a threat because she plays so well on these courts. She always prepares really well in the off-season so she is fit and ready when she arrives.

My fellow Slovakian Cibulkova has probably come out of the blue for some people but everyone on the tour knows how dangerous she can be when she's playing well. She has caused a lot of upsets in her career because she is not afraid to go after her shots and be aggressive when it counts. Like Li, she is also a very good mover. Staying aggressive is very important against big players, where it's easy to let them dictate the points, especially if you are feeling a bit nervous. But Domi really showed that she can stay on the attack against Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi-finals and when she knocked out Maria Sharapova earlier in the tournament.

This is a huge occasion for Domi and a very big day for tennis in our country. We are only 5.5 million people, but sport is very big in Slovakia and tennis is probably up there with soccer and ice hockey as the most popular to watch. We are quite a young country (we were part of Czechoslovakia until the early 1990s) and I think that makes us very patriotic, especially about sport.

We have had a lot of success in the last few years in women's tennis especially, and it has really grown, so we now have a new generation of very talented girls coming through juniors as well. When I was part of the team that won the Fed Cup in 2002 it was a really big story and things have grown from there. Any time any of us gets a big result there is a massive media interest back home.

Domi and I both speak to the Slovak media on the phone after every match we play, wherever we are in the world, and I know from my Twitter and Facebook messages how passionate the Slovakian tennis fans are and how many people are watching us on TV even at smaller tournaments. I'm sure Domi's phone has been ringing a lot in the past few days!

You have to shut that attention out a little bit in order to keep playing well. She has been in a semi-final before (at Roland Garros) and she has probably been using that experience and what she learnt from dealing with the attention then. That's when your team can really help you, by keeping all the routines you have had for every match and trying not to change too many little things so that this feels, as much as possible, like just another match.

Once they get on court and start playing, it will be about who is not afraid to go for it and execute their shots. Li Na's backhand is her biggest weapon but her forehand has also improved a lot. Cibulkova needs to find a way to neutralise that and stay on the attack, because that's when she is at her best.

Personally, I am always sad when another Australian Open comes to a close because I love being here. It's been a pretty good tournament for me and I can't wait to come back next year.

WTA STARS: FAVE WINTER OLYMPIC SPORTS
We asked six WTA players - Andrea Petkovic, Daniela Hantuchova, Sara Errani, Lisa Raymond, Aleksandra Wozniak and Sam Stosur - if they had a favorite winter sport. Here's what they said.
Published February 06, 2014 12:14

With the Winter Olympics getting underway over in Sochi, we at wtatennis.com thought we would get some feedback from the WTA stars on their favorite Winter Olympic sports and competitions.

Daniela Hantuchova echoed the sentiment - and drew on her own personal enjoyment of those sports.

"My favorite ones to watch during the Olympics will definitely be ice hockey and skiing, since I come from a very snowy country and was born in the mountains!" the Slovak commented. "Hockey is our No.1 sport and we will all watch it to support our guys in Sochi. And obviously I love skiing, as I've been doing it myself since I was three years old and it's the only sport I've done longer than tennis."

And the former World No.5's favorite athlete? "My favorite guy to watch is Svindal!"

Daniela Hantuchova changed coach, find the best
Author: SITA, Today 14:13

BRATISLAVA 7 (Reuters) - A recent change in the executive team, led by Slovakian tennis player Daniela Hantuchova took place under the influence of circumstances, but it has brought a solution that erstwhile top five world ranking "very, very pleased."

Thirty native Poprad before its entry into the tournament in Indian Wells, California, which triumphed in 2002 and 2007, explained why Ricardo Sánchez by Peter Lundgren. "The agreement was born completely unexpectedly, because my coach had to go so far to back surgery.'ve Been in such a state that the last joint tournament in late January in Paris was unable to stretch or walk. Rather, I had to take care of him I like him for me. barely flew from Australia to Europe and indeed no other option than operation has not," said the newspaper Sport Hantuchova.

Štyridsaťdeväťročný Swede Lundgren in the past has led, for example, Roger Federer, Marcela Rios, Marat Safin, Marcos Baghdatis and Stanislas Wawrinka."It's the person you admire years. I was pleasantly surprised that showed a lot of interest. Every day, I'm with him on the court, I learn new things. Tennis His view is great. Has valuable experiences. On court is always only about professionalism, but outside I positively surprised how completely into being. Normal, nothing at all to not play. doing so, I think that from the perspective of his name is the best coach ever what now exists in the circuit. Whilst we agree after Wimbledon," said Hantuchova.

Slovak duo has now been almost a month after the Bratislava Fed Cup match against German women due to the infirmary right knee. "We still do not have it wholly state. Actually, I just started playing about a week ago, so it is certainly a tennis or health is not where I would have wished it to be. However, this is a tournament that just can not completed.'s My matter of the heart, so I'm here and I will do everything to make him able to play in the best possible conditions," noted Hantuchova, who had at first cycling off and on Friday the 2nd round from 20:00 CET encounters with domestic reprezentantkou Varvara Lepčenkovou.

Cibulkova absence is not about money
Adam Zelinka, Pravda | 09.04.2014 18:00

Sitting on two chairs. While the role of the coach Dominika Cibulkova him in the new season brings joy, position Slovak Fed Cup team captain worries. Matej Liptak waiting for next weekend to keep play-off meeting in world group.

On Canadian soil, however, can not count on a pair of the best female players - Cibulková by Daniela Hantuchova. "This decision does not have to Dominikinou absence of any link," he said to reporters at a press conference stredňajšej 36-year-old coach, who will be in Quebec rely on a quartet Magdalene Rybáriková (37), Jana Čepelová (51), Carolina Schmiedlová (65) and Michaela Honcová (262).

How will absence Cibulkova Hantuchova of Slovakia's chances in Canada?
I admit, it's a big weakening. However, we must cope with the situation. I believe that the younger the players jumped at the chance. Finally, in the past I have said that, for example, Jana Čepelová, which is great srdciarkou and currently also encouraged by the excellent results of Charleston, known in the Fed Cup disable the excellent performance and cope top toy. Perhaps she will be the key to success.

Do you think that in case of victory over Germany and advance to the semifinal with Cibulkova Hantuchova would represent?
Who knows, maybe they would look a little different. Rather, I think that any procedure would a big role in the decision did not play. Finally, the combat in Canada is very important to us.

I stand by that as a coach you have it vetted Cibulkova start the tournament in Kuala Lumpur?
It was not an easy decision, a long time we thought of him. I understand that the Slovak fan reacts to such things very sensitively. I must say, however, that has never been easy to put together whole team, yet to me it succeeded, this time it did not work. The reason is simple: the Fed Cup matches coincide with the tournament program. Moreover, they are mentally and physically very demanding.

General Secretary Igor STZ Moška said that your decision to make Cibulkova disagrees. Feel support union?
Truthfully not. I know that things have a different view of its representatives. It's an uncomfortable situation for me, since I coach Cibulkova and Fed Cup captain. Dominika Makes Slovakia excellent name. People know this, and it certainly appreciated. That has not occurred in a meeting can not play looking at her big role. I'm on two chairs and I had to somehow decide.

Are you not afraid that the public would look at Cibulkova decision so that prioritize money before reprezantáciou?
Reasons for a long time does not represent, are completely different. Season develops, so that at the end of the year can play in the tournament majsteriek and keep the Top10. Previous matches in the Fed Cup convinced us that even two weeks after they were virtually unusable. And in any case we do not want to risk. Dominica needs points that it can greatly help. Everything is possible for a decision will watch over the money, but that's definitely not.

What is the reason for the absence of said Hantuchova?
The fact that it will not play, I know since the tournament in Miami. Since Daniel was injured, now needs to collect points to get into the game cool and regain lost confidence. These are all things that zavážili.

Hantuchova decision is unrelated to the fact that Cibulková not travel to Canada?
I do not see it that way at all.

Are you considering the fact that you are from the post of national coach after possible failure in Canada have resigned?
Everything is possible, we will see what will be after Canada.

The role of Slovak unit for the first time showcasing Rybáriková. Handle it?
Will the new position. I firmly believe that her team prepare during the week. Before, however, we rely on a balanced team and a strong inner spirit.

How did you select the fourth player of the team?
I spoke to Janette Husarova, which would have greatly help us in doubles, but again refused. Only reiterated that he wants to get space young players. The second alternative was Kučová Kristina, who started the tournament in Kuala Lumpur and asked me for her it would be better to start in Malaysia to be in the role of the Fed Cup fourth players.

Moška: Liptak has our trust
By Igor Moskal Matej Liptak has the full support of Slovak Tennis Association. "When I was told, however, that released Dominika Cibulkova Match in Canada, I considered his decision to be wrong. Never because I will not agree to the players during a representative action played in small tournaments," said Secretary General of STZ. (D)

LUNDGREN AIMS TO LIFT HANTUCHOVA'S GAME
Daniela Hantuchova looks to have similar success under new coach Peter Lundgren that the likes of Roger Federer, Marat Safin and others had under him.
Published April 14, 2014 12:12

Former World No.5 and six-time WTA titlist Daniela Hantuchova started working with renowned tennis coach Peter Lundgren last month, and it already appears to be paying off.

Hantuchova had lost five straight matches coming into her last event in Charleston two weeks ago, but en route to the quarterfinals there won three straight matches for the first time since the US Open.

Lundgren has worked with ATP stars Roger Federer, Marat Safin, Marcelo Rios and Stanislas Wawrinka, among others, and Hantuchova is thrilled to be the Swede's newest pupil.

"It's amazing. I can't tell you how thankful I am for this opportunity," Hantuchova said. "I wanted to work with him for years, but obviously he's been on the men's side coaching some pretty good names in the business. So I understood that.

"Having the opportunity now at this stage of my career is very motivating. It gives me a new kind of energy, and it's not easy the stuff he's trying to get me to do, but I'm prepared to do the work. I don't know how long it's going to take, but it's all great stuff, and I'm really delighted to have him by my side."

Lundgren is still getting used to some differences between the men's and women's game.

"I'm sure he sees things he doesn't see on the men's side, like double faulting three times in a row and the whole on-court coaching is pretty new," Hantuchova said. "It was kind of funny. He came on the court and didn't even sit down. I was like, 'Should I sit down?' It was all fun. He's learning fast and is getting used to the woman's thinking. I think that is the biggest difference between the girls and the boys, that they just think differently. But it's been great."

Hantuchova explained some other differences Lundgren is adjusting to.

"I'd have to say he's very surprised how fast we play," Hantuchova said. "We hit the ball really fast, whereas the guys use more spin. But overall it's pretty much the same, except the thinking part, where we, I think in general, like to make things a little bit more complicated than the guys.

"So that's something we are working on, but overall, he's just trying to get me to do the same stuff he's worked on with the guys."

Lundgren won three titles as a player on the ATP World Tour and got as high as No.25 in the world.

Daniela Hantuchova: “I had a wonderful week in Madrid in 2013”
25 April 2014

The Slovakian player gave an interview to the Mutua Madrid Open website in which she discussed her experience at the tournament last year and her burning passion for tennis.

She has been playing among the elite on the women’s tour for 15 years and continues to be successful. Daniela Hantuchova received a wild card to play in the Mutua Madrid Open last year and she responded with a great tournament in which she knocked out players such as 2011 champion Petra Kvitova. During her participation in the Marrakech tournament, and on her 31st birthday, the Slovakian player answered some questions for the Mutua Madrid Open’s website and spoke about her experiences in Madrid and how fortunate she feels to be able to make a living by doing what she loves most.

Daniela, in the last Mutua Madrid Open you played brilliantly and in the opening rounds you defeated players like Sloane Stephens and Petra Kvitova, who won the Madrid tournament in 2011 and you’d never beaten her before. How did you see your level of play during the tournament?
I was really grateful for the wild card in Madrid last year so I wanted to take that opportunity and show my best tennis which I think I did, so I was very pleased about that. We had a wonderful week last year. I love the tournament and the city, and we went to see Real Madrid play football with my coach!

You then won the Birmingham grass court tournament and got to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in five years. What memories do you take from these tournaments?
I am realizing more and more how lucky and blessed I am to do in life what I love doing after all these years on the Tour. Every moment I get to spend on the court is a great memory. Winning Birmingham and finally getting a title on grass was of course special.

Do you think it was your best season of the last few years?
I take every season as a new experience and opportunity to improve and learn something. It is difficult to compare one year to another because the level keeps rising all the time. Every year I have had great moments on court.

You’ve won Indian Wells twice, the Fed Cup with Slovakia, lots of doubles titles… What has been your best win in the tennis world?
I definitely think winning Indian wells twice. The second time was probably more exceptional since I felt it was harder. Winning the fed cup for my country was the proudest moment and an emotion that I will remember forever. Sorry that was against Spain in the finals!

Last year we interviewed you during the Mutua Madrid Open and you spoke of your love for tennis and that this is what drives you on to keep playing after so many years at the top. What is the most satisfaction you get as a professional player?
I think those few minutes right after you win a match when you realize you gave it all you had in you and it all worked out. That is a sense of pure happiness, it is as simple as that. And a constant motivator for me is the ability to help others like via danielafoundation.com thanks to what I do.

What do you enjoy the most?
Apart from playing tennis, I like staying active in other sports such as skiing and golf. Since we get to play in exciting and interesting cities, I enjoy getting to learn about their cultures. In Madrid, I say my top activities would be the Prado museum, walking around the botanical gardens and of course like any girl, the shopping!

Do you have the same motivation as at the start of your career?
I think my goals and drive have changed over the years in a way that it is not based too much on results, but more about wanting to improve different parts of my game. I understand better now that it is a constant work in progress.

A few months ago you played doubles with Martina Hingis who came back to the circuit after a number of years in retirement. How was the experience and what is your relationship with her like?
Martina is not only one of the greatest champions we have in our sport, I am fortunate enough to call her a close friend. Nobody probably understands tennis as well as she does. She has been a huge help over the years in my career and I respect her very much.

International tennis pro and model swings into San Diego

In July 2012, Hantuchová appeared nude on the cover of ESPN: The Magazine’s “The Body Issue.” Today, the Slovakian tennis star is posing (clothed, sorry) for the cover of PacificSD’s International Issue. She’s in town to make preparations for her upcoming season with the Aviators, San Diego’s new professional tennis franchise.

“Being drafted by the Aviators is very exciting,” says Hantuchová. “I’ve never played team tennis before.” One of seven teams comprising the Mylan World TeamTennis (WTT) league, which International Tennis Hall of Famer Billie Jean King co-founded with her ex-husband in 1974, the Aviators also include twins Mike and Bob Bryan, the world’s leading men’s doubles players. San Diego businessman Russell Geyser bought the team, formerly the New York Sportimes (2013’s last-place finisher), and moved it to San Diego.

When competing for the WTT’s coveted King Trophy, the Aviators will play five sets (men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles), facing off against the top players in the world, including Andy Roddick, Martina Hingis, sisters Venus and Serena Williams and many others.

To prepare for the coming WTT season (July 6-27, 2014), Hantuchová hired Peter Lundgren, former coach of Roger Federer, who’s currently ranked fourth in the world in men’s singles.

“Peter’s the best coach I’ve ever known,” she says. “I’ve wanted to work with him for many years, and this means so much to me.”

Off the court, Hantuchová’s service comes in another form — helping children. She established the Daniela Foundation, which supports a Cambodian hospital that cares for 120 HIV-positive children, and started a children’s charity near her original hometown in Slovakia.

“I’m trying to promote a healthy lifestyle for kids from a young age, encouraging them to be active, play sports and follow their dreams,” she says.

Trained as a classical pianist and fluent in five languages (she’s a great golfer, too), Hantuchová is something of a Renaissance woman. She’s also single.

“I can’t wait to have a family,” she says. “I would like at least two or three kids. Now I’m just waiting for the right husband to come along.”

Interested parties — in tennis, not marriage — can catch a glimpse of Hantuchová when she and the rest of the Aviators play seven home games at the Valley View Casino Center in July.

Always enjoy reading interviews of Daniela. It was particularly enlightening to learn this:
To prepare for the coming WTT season (July 6-27, 2014), Hantuchová hired Peter Lundgren, former coach of Roger Federer, who’s currently ranked fourth in the world in men’s singles.
Seriously? Hired to prepare for World Team Tennis?     And sports writers wonder why most everyone considers them to be imbeciles.

Let's Go, Daniela!
