Wickmayer just beat Rybarikova 6-3 6-2 which is a bit of an upset, so she's next up for Daniela.

seen from Daniela's perspective, I think this is a good result. She is 2-0 with Wickmayer, and beat her in ss recently. But I like Rybarikova as well, so I am not feeling the result as such

@ BlueDragon - Wickmayer is no easy opponent either, and I think she has a very good chance against Rybarikova. I don't think we can presume it will be Daniela v Magdalena in the R64.

yeah, I was completely wrong, Wickmayer won 6-3 6-2

I don't think you were the only one.
Wickmayer won't be an easy second round match for Daniela. The Belgian has got a match under her belt now whereas Daniela will be playing her first singles match since she lost to Razzano in Dubai almost three weeks ago. The doubles match today will hopefully allow her to get some competitive practice in though.
At least Daniela takes a 2-0 head-to-head into the match against Yanina, one of those wins coming as recently as the Fed Cup in early February.
Hopefully Daniela can come through this one relatively comfortably and set-up (most likely) a R32 match with Elena Dementieva.

Wickmayer is not easy at all IMO. But we can think positive a little bit because of the H2H. So I think Daniela can get into this match with little extra confidence.

All of the Kud/Rod breaks have come at 40-40. The modified doubles scoring system has made matches a bit of a crapshoot.

^Good point. That's essentially the sacrifice the tour makes in exchange for shorter matches which increases the number of quality singles players who play doubles.
Wickmayer's results have been a step below Magda's for some time now, so she's clearly the easier of the two opponents. I'm not sure she'll will be an easy win, though. Daniela should be given some credit though as she hasn't had any real bad losses/performances since the atrocity against Paszek in Bali.

Kud/Rod win first set 6-4. They won 4 games by winning the deuce point, half these points got to Daniela & Ai, they win the set.

Still just win the next set and the super tiebreak and Hantuyama go through.

2-2 in the second, I think that's the fifth game Kud/Rod have won at 40-40.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

Daniela & Ai take the second 6-4.

Super tiebreak on the way.

Daniela and Ai have a mini-break lead late in the tie-break, leading *8-7.

Hantuyama have missed three match points, including an Ai double fault. But they just saved their third match point in return. 14-14.

lost.
16-14 in the super tie-break. They should have won. In total, they won 4 points more than the other team

Daniela and Ai are out in the opening round. Losing very narrowly to Kudryavtseva and Rodionova.

Scoreline: 6-4 4-6 (16-14).

Sugiyama double-faulted at *10-9 (MP), and although they managed to compose themselves and win four more points that could well have cost them.

Scoring at the end of the super tie-break:
H/S 11-11* K/R, 11-12*, *12-12, *12-13, 13-13*, 13-14*, *14-14, *14-15, 14-16*.

An unfortunate loss but at least Daniela has had some time on court before her first singles match.

Shit, this sucks. 16- 14 in the tiebreak after having 3 MPs. Normally I'm fine with what happens in doubles but this one hurts.
Daniela & Ai won 4 more points but not the important ones. The scoring system helped Kud/Rod because they won 5 games at 40-40, 4 in the first set. Still, that's the scoring system and they won the points that mattered in it. But just in contrast, Szavay & Vesnina had a bunch of BPs and GPs in the Australian Open, 7 BPs in the first set, but Daniela & Ai won 6-1 6-2. Just goes to show how different the advantage system is compared to the first to 4 system.

Ai double faulting at MP Hantuyama at 10-9 didn't help.

BPs and second serve were decisive.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

^Good point. That's essentially the sacrifice the tour makes in exchange for shorter matches which increases the number of quality singles players who play doubles. It isn't happening. Those who don't wanna play doubles won't play it regardless of any changes WTA makes (except of combined singles & doubles rankings or equal prize money for singles and doubles). It might be a bit more plaesant for those who already play doubles, but in the end it makes no difference in terms of who plays and who doesn't.
