Regular season finale. Kveta is playing mixed with Bob Bryan, so the brothers are still around. Devverman pulled off a 5-0 sweep.
Doubles: Strange Days Indeed, Most Peculiar Mama. Or is it the curse of Rennae Stubbs?
Another 5-2 loss. The strange stuff: Kveta served twice in a row, getting broke the second time. While there's the ESPN 3 stream, too much happening in my house to be able to watch, so I started to fear the worst, shoulder miseries or something. But then Daniela served with the team down 4-1, and she got all 4 1st serves in and San Diego won all 4 points. (If anyone's watching and has an explanation, please post.) Very weird. We'll see how singles goes. If the Aviators had a 3rd female, with this match meaningless and the playoffs tomorrow, Daniela might have been given the night off.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Mixed won 5-2. Daniela went up against a true favorite of ours, Varvara Lepchenko.
Singles: Such a worrywort I am. Daniela wins 5-3. Held all 4 times and broke the villainous Varvara in the third game, all she wrote. So Dani was perfect on serve for the evening. In singles she was 15-21 1st in, winning 11-15, and 5-6 on 2nd serve (recall how this was a weakness early on in WTT). No DF'S or aces. San Diego leads 17-10. After the Bryans got done……Final score San Diego 22, Austin 12.
For the regular season, Daniela's record was 18-10 (10-4 doubles, 8-6 singles)! :)
The Aviators face Springfield in the first round tomorrow at the normal 7:00 PM San Diego time.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Another good win in singles for Daniela, it's her fourth in a row and she's starting to get some momentum as she gets used to the format. She's getting her revenge against players that had beaten her previously in WTT or on the tour. Playing most days is getting her into a good rhythm and she's also winning more points on her second serve which is helping, especially in a short format of WTT. It's a wee bit disappointing to lose the doubles, especially as Daniela had been doing so well with Peschke earlier but they're still a good team and Daniela's getting the wins in singles.

Western Conference Championship against Springfield and I have to favour the Aviators to win that one, especially as the Bryan brothers will be playing. Dave Macpherson, the Aviators coach, is also the Bryan's coach.

Thanks for the report again, ALex.

Washington beat Philadelphia, so they will go for their umpteenth WTT title on Sunday. Will it be at San Diego?
Devverman missed 3 set points at 4-4 and lost 5-4 to Russell.
Doubles: Incredible. Live scores had Daniela and Kveta winning the set 5-2. I began typing, then went back to check match stats, and all of a sudden it was 4-3, then 4-4. Then, just like Devverman, they had 3 set points. However, they put it away on the first one. 5-4 win, tying the match at 9. This was a crazy set. Daniela was broken on both of her service games, Kveta went one for two, and Olga and Liga Dekmeijere were broke 4 times, including the decisive
game. Daniela got 7-11 1st in, but only 2 led to points, and she was 1-4 2nd serves, with one DF and no aces. The Aviators could have won the set big had Dani been on, but Springfield must be kicking themselves. Of course, we want our gal to be an integral part of a playoff victory. Hopefully she got the bad stuff out of her system and will do better in singles.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Bob Bryan and Kveta restored some order, winning mixed 5-3. San Diego leads 14-12 at the break. Should Daniela beat Olga and leave the Bryans a nice lead, that would make it a good night for her. Come up big, Daniela!
Singles: She didn't. :( :( Olga shut her out. What a bitter pill. Olga won all three 3-all points. Less said the better. Springfield leads 17-14. I'm stunned.
The Bryans lost. No one will blame them for this, and no one should. Final score: Springfield 22, San Diego 17.
Well, this gives Daniela a few days to prepare for Stanford. But what a downer this was going back to the tour. Dani's probably miserable right now; got to shake it off quick.
It's been a pleasure relaying all this to you guys, except for tonight.

Ach, this is so disappointing, especially Daniela getting bagelled by Govortsova who isn't someone that Daniela should lose to. It seems like this is one of those times when everything went right for Govortsova and nothing went right for Daniela. Springfield were 5/6 on 3 all points, including 3/3 for Govortsova and it seemed like all the important points went their way. They came back from 4-1 down in mixed doubles to 4-4 before Daniela & peschke put that set away, Daniela lost 5-0 losing all 3 3 all points and the Bryans lost too and I thought the Bryans were as close to a guaranteed win as you could get. It's San Diego in the playoffs, I think they took on the spirit of Nate Kaeding.

It's been a pleasure relaying all this to you guys, except for tonight.
Thanks for doing them, Alex, we all appreciate your time and effort.

Aviators season comes to an end
Springfield Lasers surprise in Western Conference Championship after San Diego is swept women's singles
By Jordan Littman10:17 P.M.JULY 24, 2014

Even the world’s No. 1 men’s doubles duo couldn’t overcome the San Diego Aviators' deficit on Thursday evening.

After falling behind by three games before the final set of the Mylan World TeamTennis Western Conference Championship against the Springfield Lasers, Bob and Mike Bryan failed to surmount the comeback the Aviators desperately needed.

The Aviators’ inaugural season came to an end in a 22-17 loss at Valley View Casino Center in front of a stunned crowd, as the Lasers (8-7) advanced to Sunday’s WTT Finals against the Washington Kastles.

“Obviously, it was really disappointing,” Aviators head coach David Macpherson said. “We’ve had a great season, but sometimes when things don’t go your way, things don’t go your way.”

Before the start of the fourth set, women’s singles, the Aviators (10-5) seemed to be in a good position.

Just this past Sunday, the Aviators beat Springfield, 21-15. World No. 31 Daniela Hanutchova — who had been named the WTT 2014 women’s most valuable player before the match —had won five of her previous six sets. The Bryan brothers were to follow, and they had lost just four games in three sets of action.

The Aviators led, 14-12.

But Hantuchova crumpled against Olga Govortsova, an opponent she had bested, 5-3, just four days earlier. Down 1-0, Hantuchova’s serve was broken. Down 3-0, her serve was broken again. By the end of the fourth set, Govortsova had swept the Aviators star.

The score was 17-14, Springfield. The tide had turned.

With the Bryan brothers on court, though, slim hopes remained. That is, until the Lasers’ Ross Hutchins and Michael Russell broke Mike Bryan’s serve at 1-1 in the fifth set. The Lasers pair then breezed to a 5-3 set win.

And on match point, the Aviators’ season ended on a decisive smash.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.

Sometimes this happens. Maybe Daniela had one eye already thinking about Stanford, glad she got the title WTT Most Valuable Player 2014. She definitely deserved it and I think she really enjoyed her time doing WTT. Maybe once she retires from the WTA we may see her play in WTT for many years to come!

Nate Kaeding, good one, Chungwit!
I wondered, never having cared before, if WTT had MVP awards. Makes what happened to Daniela last night a little sadder. But you guys know that I absolutely love it when our gal gets any kind of positive recognition, so this is terrific! And if one looks at a WTT record book down the road, it will say Daniela Hantuchova women's MVP 2014, and it won't have an asterisk referring to last night. Congratulations, young lady. Roulez, Dani!

Let's Go, Daniela!

One last WTT thought: Recall that the Aviators moved to San Diego. They were the New York Sportimes. Last year they went 4-10, losing their last 7. They played half of their matches on Randall's Island, the part of New York City that time forgot. The other half were played 30 miles from me at the SEFCU Arena in Albany, a totally colorless, bland facility. John McEnroe played a few times, but otherwise, Kveta was their marquee player and the only one that returned this year. Simply put, this was a decrepit, nearly bankrupt franchise. None of the other teams that made the playoffs this year improved anywhere near as much as San Diego.
The Bryans weren't responsible for that, as little as they played. While Kveta was terrific, she didn't do so hot last year with other partners. The men were liabilities as often as they were assets. You know what? They got it right. Daniela was the MVP. She had the most to do with turning a loser into a Division champion.
So am I frustrated that the franchise moved and then added Dani? Had they stayed, and drafted Dani, and she got one look at Randall's Island and the SEFCU Arena, she'd still be running!!

Let's Go, Daniela!

I had never watched WTT before Daniela played this year and as disappointing as last night was, the format really grew on me this week. I hope Daniela will be back next year.

Yes the scoring system grew on me too.

Will be interesting to see how Daniela will transition to the regular tour. She will probably find that she has a lot more opportunities to win games back.

Is it just me or does Huber always react way over the top when she gets hit by a ball. Eg. Petrova Wimbledon incident and now this and apparently she got hit and cried last year in WTT too. I know it looked painful and scary but I always feel she milks it to try and disrupt her opponents. Maybe I'm jusy being cynical but I don't trust the lady one bit!!

Daniela Hantuchova, Marcelo Melo named Mylan World TeamTennis MVPs as Mylan WTT Finals weekend kicks off in Springfield
Somdev Devvarman, Anabel Medina Garrigues Named Top Rookies; Aviators’ David Macpherson tabbed as Coach of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (July 26, 2014) – Mylan World TeamTennis is recognizing some of their top players as the 2014 season concludes this weekend with the Mylan WTT Finals in Springfield. The league announced that Daniela Hantuchova of the San Diego Aviators and Marcelo Melo of the Philadelphia Freedoms are the Mylan World TeamTennis MVPs.

Somdev Devvarman of the San Diego Aviators and Anabel Medina Garrigues of the Texas Wild were named as Mylan WTT Rookies of the Year, while San Diego’s David Macpherson was named Mylan WTT Coach of the Year.
These players were standouts in the 39th season of Mylan World TeamTennis which concludes Sunday, July 27, with the Mylan WTT Finals in Springfield, Mo. The Washington Kastles will be facing off against the Springfield Lasers in a rematch of the 2013 Finals. The Kastles are vying for a record-tying fourth consecutive championship while the Lasers are looking for their first title in five finals. Action begins at 4:00p.m. Central at Mediacom Stadium at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. Tickets are available at Cooper Tennis Complex (through 9 p.m. Saturday and beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday) or by calling 417-837-5800.
The 2014 Mylan WTT Finals will be featured on ESPN3 at 5:00 p.m. ET with ESPN2 joining the live coverage at 6:00 p.m. ET.

2014 Mylan WTT Award Winners
MYLAN WTT FEMALE MVP: Daniela Hantuchova, San Diego Aviators
Daniela Hantuchova of the San Diego Aviators is used to the spotlight after climbing as high as No. 5 in the world in singles on the WTA Tour. However, Hantuchova credited her teammates with helping her win the Female MVP award in her first Mylan WTT season. She finished second in women’s singles with a winning percentage of .559 and teamed with Kveta Peschke to finish as the No. 2 women’s doubles team in the league with a .606 winning percentage.
“I’m very excited but this has been a true team effort,” said Hantuchova. “It is a privilege to be in such a great environment with these teammates and our coach.”

MYLAN WTT MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Somdev Devvarman, San Diego Aviators
Somdev Devvarman was the first overall pick in the Mylan WTT Roster Draft earlier this spring and his play proved it was a great selection by the Aviators. Devvarman and Raven Klaasen were the league’s top-rated men’s doubles team, winning .590 percent of their matches. Devvarman also finished third in men’s singles with a winning percentage of .495.
“I’m happy to be playing in a team competition again,” said Devvarman. “Thanks to my teammates for believing in me and helping me through the season. We have great coaches and I have had a great time playing the whole season. I hope to keep it going until the end.”

MYLAN WTT COACH OF THE YEAR: David Macpherson, San Diego Aviators
Although Macpherson is a Mylan WTT veteran with 14 seasons as a player, this summer was his first as a coach. He led the team to a 10-4 regular season record and called his coaching experience a “memorable” one.
“I love my team and I have loved them from day one,” said Macpherson. “Three of our four losses were close and painful but we stuck together and the losses brought us closer. That’s the thing about Mylan WTT, every match is memorable and you can go from hero to goat on any given night. But our team is 100% there for whoever needed to be picked up. We loved playing for each other and representing San Diego.”

2014 MYLAN WTT AWARDS:
MYLAN WTT FEMALE MVP: Daniela Hantuchova (San Diego Aviators)
MYLAN WTT MALE MVP: Marcelo Melo (Philadelphia Freedoms)
MYLAN WTT FEMALE ROOKIE: Anabel Medina Garrigues (Texas Wild)
MYLAN WTT MALE ROOKIE: Somdev Devvarman (San Diego Aviators)
MYLAN WTT COACH OF THE YEAR: David Macpherson (San Diego Aviators)
NOTE: To be considered for regular season awards, a player must compete in 80% of their team matches.

Daniela Hantuchova is right about everything.
