Well at least they got the win but Daniela not winning her singles again is starting to worry me. Also she hit 5 double faults according to the stats.

Peschke and Daniela seem like a really good doubles team.

Will see if Daniela is playing the first away tie this evening.

Also can someone explain why some teams the aviators play like 4 times (austin acers) and others only once or twice (washington)?

I don't think Daniela's ever won any of these exhibition matches so in that respect it's nothing new but Daniela's performances in the singles are concerning, especially on her second serve which had been weak in both matches. Just looking at the stats, it seems that Townsend was absolutely belting the ball and it was going in as she was winning a lot of points on both her serves but getting less than 50% of her first serves in, which indicates ball bashing. Still, it's better that Daniela gets a look at Townsend here than on the tour when there'll be ranking points at stake.

WTT is divided into a Western & Eastern conference, like most American sports, and San Diego and the Texan teams are in the Western conference and the other teams are in the Eastern conference. It cuts down on travelling and builds "Local" rivalries. The road trip next week looks awfully long and right now it seems that Daniela's going to be on every leg. The tennis itself won't be too taxing but the travelling will be tough, especially as Daniela won't have too much time to rest or practice.

Daniela was broken twice by Townsend, the first game and the last, and the first one was at love (oops, WTT doesn't use terms like that; make it 0). Never really came close to breaking back.
One of the cool things about this is that when Dani loses, we don't have to wait like 5-14 days until she plays again. All road trips in this venture are crazy, and I guess that the matches are in effect your practices. It remains to be seen if this ends up being helpful for our gal down the road or not; I hope she's having fun with it.

Let's Go, Daniela!

Elsewhere: In Bad Gastein (anyone know where Good Gastein is?), Voegele beat Svitolina. Unless Giorgi wins the tourney, Daniela will move up 2 spots to #32.

(AUSTIN) How's Dani doing? Order of matches are different tonight. Women's doubles came up fourth, and singles last.
Doubles: Daniela and Kveta go down for the first time, beaten by Zvonareva and Bartoli 5-3. Daniela was broken in her first service game with 2 DF's, then held to tie things at 3, but Kveta was broken in the last game. Score is San Diego 16, Austin 15, so Dani and Vera will decide things.
Singles: Daniela disaster. Vera wins 5-2. Daniela broken at 1-0, 2 DF's. Her overall first serve pct. for both matches was 45. In her first 3 WTT singles, she has not broken anyone's serve yet. Yuckaroonie.
Final score: Austin 20, San Diego 18.

Thank goodness the regular tour does not score like WTT, otherwise Daniela wouldn't be in the top 100 right now!!!

If Daniela had won one more game then it would have gone to overtime. Daniela effectively lost the tie for the aviators...she needs to sort herself out and prove she's a valuable member of the team.

Tonight's match Daniela will most likely be facing Medina G, someone Daniela has a good H2H with on tour...Daniela needs to win this one.

This also proves just how slow of a starter Daniela is in her regular matches...really hoping that WTT will help her for the 2nd half of the year.

Daniela just isn't playing well or contributing very much. Zvonareva has a good record against Daniela and she had a good run at Wimbledon while Townsend is a highly rated young prospect who beat Cornet at Roland Garros, but I still felt that Daniela would be able to do better in singles than she's done so far.

Medina Garrigues has been terrible in singles for at least the past year so Daniela should be able to beat her.
One thing I noticed from the adverts in the San Diego media was that last week the adverts were for the Aviators featuring Daniela playing every home game, now they've switched to Bryan Brothers play 20 July.

We'll just see what effect this has on the rest of her season. I'm sure that she's playing this for fun and her recent summer hardcourt campaigns generally haven't been great so Daniela's wanting to try something different. If she has a good hardcourt season, especially at the US Open, then this will have been fine, but right now, I'm not feeling too optimistic. Hingis beat Bouchard 5-1 in WTT last year and Bouchard's done okay since so WTT results don't really correlate too much with Tour results. I want Daniela to do better, it'll be far more fun for her when she's winning and it can give her confidence and momentum for when she goes back on tour.

Well Daniela beat Garrigues 5 -2 in the Womens singles tonight so that is positive.

It's the Danielabel reunion in San Diego. You guys knew that Anabel has been terrible in singles this year.
Singles……And she still is! YES!! Daniela gets that elusive first WTT singles win, 5-2. She achieved her first break of serve of the season to help break things open. Dani's serve kicked in tonight. She held all four times. Nice numbers: 73% first serves in, 79 % (15-19)1st serve points won, her first 2 aces of the season, only 1 DF, and 3-3 on deciding points, including in the very first game, where she had her only DF, and that had to shoot confidence through her. After San Diego lost in men's singles, Daniela put them ahead, 8-7.
Doubles: It's a twin killing! 5-3 Dani and Kveta over Anabel/Darija Jurak. Dani/Kveta rolled to a 4-0 lead, including our gal winning her service to 0. Then, out came the Maalox! At 4-1 Daniela was broken to 0, messing up her serve stats (still overall 73% first serves in and 76% 1st serve won). They then squandered 2 match points, making it 4-3, then fell behind 3-2 on Kveta's serve  . Thankfully they converted the next 2 points for the victory. I'll take it.
They increased the Aviators lead to 18-14.
Texas only had 4 players. Anabel played 3 matches in a row, with like a 10 minute break between mixed and women's doubles. So much for "after suitable rest".
And wouldn't you know, those 3 straight lost games came back to haunt. San Diego's men's doubles team gagged it up big time, losing 5-1 to square the score at 19, then lost the overtime game. Final score: Texas 20, San Diego 19.

Let's Go, Daniela!

It's a win in singles for Daniela and it'll do her confidence a bit of good to win both her matches. Medina Garrigues has been terrible in singles for the past year but Daniela still had to beat her and she did.

It's a shame San Diego lost the tie but at least Daniela won her matches.

Thanks for the report on the tie, Alex.

Much better from Daniela. The last two ties the aviators have been unlucky...at least they have a day off. But from 2-0 to 2-2 they really need to step up and start winning from the get go with the next bunch of ties.

Most welcome, guys. As long as Daniela wins, I'm not all that hepped up on how the team does. This road trip from Hades will probably leave them below .500, especially because Washington is one of the stops, and they're the WTT dynasty. It would be intriguing, however, if they make the playoffs, because they'll have the Bryan brothers, who never in a million years would have blown last night's match.

Daniela's second serve is still weak as she won only 1/7 on it against Medina Garrigues but she got 73% 1st serves in and won 79% of them. For the match Daniela only won 3 more points - 23 to 20, but she won it 5-2. It's about Daniela getting the win and a bit of confidence and momentum but she really needs to work on improving her second serve.

In what has proven to be not-so-Bad Gastein, Giorgi lost today to a qualifier (see, it isn't only Daniela that happens to). That moves Dani up to #32. Hopefully she'll be able to pick up more points and spots before US Open with those 500 pts. to defend.

Let's Go, Daniela!
