You've got to give a lot of credit to Soderling who played a great match and thoroughly deserved his win.True,But Rafa's FH was terrible today. No bite whatsoever, and consistently landing short and allowing Soderling to unload with his big groundstrokes.

Elena knows:
DEMENTIEVA'S OPINION: Not everyone at Roland Garros believes Rafael Nadal will definitely defend his title at the French Open.
Elena Dementieva, who lost to Samantha Stosur 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 Saturday in the third round, hasn't been impressed with Nadal's play at the clay-court major so far this year.
"He actually looks a little bit tired to me," said Dementieva, the 2004 French Open runner-up. "Even (though) he's winning pretty easily his first two rounds, it doesn't look like he's fresh enough. Maybe he was playing too much."
The top-seeded Nadal, who reached the fourth round Friday, is trying to become the first player to win five straight French Open titles.
"I think it's going to be a tough challenge for him to win this time, actually," Dementieva said.

Guys like Söderling are generally a bad match-up for Nadal as they can hit through him unlike guys who use topspin. Berdych also had some success against Nadal in the past. This is probably the upset of the decade. Not sure whcih result from the past could be comparable, Krajicek beating Sampras at Wimby 96 perhaps?

Good call by Dementieva. 8-)

I think this is probably one of the biggest upsets of the Open era. I was in total shock when Nadal hit his volley wide to lose the match. The commentators on the BBC were speachless. Just an extraordinary match. I guess Nadal had to lose big some time soon, I just don't think many people expected it to happen today, during Roland Garros, or even during 2009. There had been alot of talk following Nadal's Australian Open win that he could possibly win all four slams this year. Perhaps 2009 will be the year that he 'just' wins the Australian and US Opens.

The most relevant comparable result for me was Kevin Curren beating Johnny Mac at Wimbledon in 1985. Soderling has always been a very dangerous player.

One of the most tragic days during the last years for me personally. Seems to be a bit exaggerated, but it was just unpredictable.
It was surely both, Söderling playing the match of his life and Nadal clearly wasn't at his best.
Seems unblievable, as Rafa crushed Robin in Rome 6:1 6:0.

Federer just came away with a five-set win against Haas. Haas was in front of winning the match in the third, but couldn't covert his break point. Then it was over.
I don't know it Roger will be able to win the French Open. His has more pressure now IMO, as Rafa is out and this time he has the great chance. He is also playing very inconsistant, as nearly everybody.
Really hard to say who is the favourite now.

Upset specials:

Chang beats Lendl, 1989 Roland Garros,

Peter Doohan beats Boris Becker, 1987 Wimbledon.

Del Potro is hoping whoever wins his match against Federer will go all the way.

Everybody wants Roger to win this tournament,” del Potro said. “If I can’t win this tournament, I want to see, next Sunday, Roger with the trophy.”

I am big fan of delpotro, but honestly i want federer to win rolland
not bc will level sampras, deserves to have one clay major

SF:

Söderling bt. Gonzalez 6:3 7:5 5:7 4:6 6:4
Federer bt. Del Potro 3:6 7:6(2) 2:6 6:1 6:4

Too bad Del Potro lost that match. He was the better player for at least 3 sets and would have really deserved that win. In the end Roger won another match he could have lost in straight sets.

Final:

Söderling - Federer

A remarkable achievement by a great, great player.

Sampras got phoned after the match and said that Federer was the greatest ever.
I can imagine that when the phone rings at Sampras's house he picks it up and says "Federer's the best," and the other guy says "Hi, can I interest you in double glazing?"

According to Mats Wilander, Federer is not GOAT. He said Nadal was better in this generation and a player like Laver was all time better, and that for Federer to be GOAT, he would have to beat Nadal in a Grand Slam.

This RG is not so significant. Federer beat Haas, Monfils, Del Potro and Soderling. All good players, but it's not like we didn't know he was capable of beating them at RG. I see no glory in this title, all Federer had to do was beating several of his pigeons. That didn't make him GOAT, unless you think he had already been GOAT before and this title is just a confirmation of it.

Spot on,martin. But ye gods is Rafa in trouble-a bone edema in his knee, and if the Spanish press are to be believed, his parents have just split up. It's a sad thought but we may have seen the best of Nadal.

I get your point, but it's still a 14th slam title and a career slam. I already thought of him as GOAT before this tournament, but kind of felt that in order for most doubters to shut up he would need at least 14 slams and one of each.
Do you agree with Mats that Nadal is better, and that Roger needs to beat Nadal in a best of 5 match to be even considered best of this generation? Federer has beat Nadal in slams before, and has been more consistent outside of slams - when he was number 1 compared to Rafa at number 1 now.
