Post subject:  ATP World Tour Tennis Season 2009

The season kicks off in Brisbane, Chennai and Doha, all ATP World Tour 250 events.
Nadal, Federer, Murray and Roddick are in Doha, Djokovic and Tsonga head to Brisbane, while Davydenko is in Chennai.
The only top-eight player not in action is Frenchman Simon, who will not play on the tour until the second week.

Brisbane International

Djokovic [1] v Berdych [5]
Verdasco [3] v Fish [6]
Stepanek [8] v Soderling [4]
Gasquet [7] v Tsonga [2]

Chennai Open

Davydenko [1] v Granollers [8]
Cilic [3] v Tipsarevic [7]
Moya [6] v Karlovic [4]
Schuettler [5] v Wawrinka [2]

Qatar ExxonMobil Open

Nadal [1] v Monfils [5][WC]
Roddick [4] v Andreev [6]
Tursunov [7] v Murray [3]
Kohlschreiber [8] v Federer [2]

Doha should be a particularly interesting event since the top four seeds all played in Abu Dhabi this week. Federer and Murray are in the same half, and Murray now has a very good record against the Swiss, including the exhibition win this week. Roddick played quite poorly against Davydenko this week, and was dispatched fairly comfortably in the end, while Nadal has looked in good form from the start despite injury worries coming from Spain, and beat Davydenko at the semi-stage in straight sets (6-2 6-3). I can't see Nadal being troubled until the final, but in the bottom half of the draw the potential semi-final between Federer and Murray could be a very tight contest, and a good indicator as to who may be lifting the trophy in Melbourne in a few weeks time.

I'm really excited about the new season. After the exhibition I think it is clear that Murray is in really good form already. Lets see how Federer and Nadal will react and how they can fight back.

Murray certainly has made a rapid start to the season, albeit in a exhibition, wins against Blake, Federer and Nadal back to back to back is pretty impressive at any stage of the season, he will certainly look to stamp his claim to the major titles early after last years dissapointment in the Australian Open

"I got in trouble in Moscow."
He added: "It's OK, I can survive. Just some small problem that I wasn't in the right place at the right time. Yes, I won the fight. I'm good, I'm OK."

What a scamp, he's always involved in quality shenanigans.

Is Marat Safin a mentalist?

Also Djokovic lost the first match of the season against Gulbis.

Maybe a good sign for Daniela. :?

It's not that huge a shock that Gulbis beat Djokovic as Gulbis is a much better player than his ranking, but had been having draws like this a lot last season. He'd been competitive in most of these matches but had just fallen short, this year he's got more experience of these situations. Gulbis is someone that can get in the top ten this year because he has the talent.

Brisbane probably represented the best chance Djokovic's best chance to get ahead of Federer in the rankings as he was only ten points behind. Federer was hampered by illness at the start of last year and doesn't have as many points to defend as Djokovic who has to defend the Australian Open and Indian Wells. If anything, it looks like Murray will overtake Djokovic as he has far fewer points to defend than Djokovic and Murray's in great form. Murray should gain a lot of ground at the Australian Open as he has nothing to defend there while Djokovic is the defending champion.

ATP Doha:
Gael Monfils def. Nadal 6-4 6-4  :D
it was a good match and Rafa seemed to be a bit unconcentrated while Gael hit many winners and therefore deserves his first win against a world number 1.

I hope that Kohlschreiber won't be a problem for Federer in the upcoming match.

Go Monfils. I've always liked him, and he keeps charming me up with wins like these.

Please, someone teach Roddick how to hit approach shots. It's painful to see him get passed each time he goes to the net regardless of who stands on the other side of it.

Was even smaller before last week, if I remember rightly Nole was 10 points behind Federer after winning the Masters Cup and would of gone above him if he beat Tsonga in the group

"He's the favourite?" Federer asked at a media conference for the invitational Kooyong Classic.

"Good for him. It won't help him a whole lot," the smiling Swiss added.
