Women's tennis tournament is moving away from Carson
Event held last seven years at Home Depot Center will shift next summer to La Costa.

The women's pro tennis tournament held at the Home Depot Center in Carson the last seven years will move to San Diego County next summer.

Pending a site inspection, the tournament will be played at the La Costa resort in Carlsbad, starting Aug. 2. That will immediately follow a tournament played annually at Stanford. San Diego and La Costa had a popular women's tour stop for 24 years, until it was purchased by the WTA Tour and closed after the 2007 event.

There will also be new events in Kuala Lumpur ('Malaysia Classic', 22-28 February 2010) and Copenhagen ('e-Boks Danish Open', 2-8 August 2010)

It's such a shame that Wickmayer and Wozniacki have to play their first Grand Slam Semifinal in an almost empty Stadium in front of only a few hundred spectators
They deserve much more attention!
Damn Rain.

Nice job, Serena. Caroline and Kim didn't get the recognition they deserve tonight because Serena Williams had to cause a scene by cussing and threatening one of the lines people. Oh brother. But Carolina Wozniacki vs Kim Clijsters should make for one hell of a good match in the finals. That whole incident is going to be in the news for weeks...

Yes, that was disgusting and I almost never get on players for disputing calls with linesmen or chair umpires. Even worse was CBS' coverage which never showed the other semifinal even though it was 4-3 and deuce at the time the other semifinal got over. That's why in the mainstream US, only the Williamses and Sharapova are household names. The TV stations do everything in their power to make sure no one else is presented as a star.

bad week for the Danish Open. In the middle of the US Open hard court season, this means no chance of any player I want to see and only Caro as a name for the audience, and also Caro having to miss the US Open hard court series

Clijsters has produced probably the best ever come-back from any tennis player in the Open Era. Just three tournaments played and she has a ranking inside the world's top-twenty. Quite incredible.

A really great tournament for Kim, who beat a lot of top players and played some of her best ever tennis.
She did come back after nine months out to become the first player to do the Indian Wells/Miami doubles since Graf in 2005, and she'd already beaten quality players in Cincinnati and Toronto so it wasn't that huge a shock that she won.

Kim's a genuinely nice person and a class act so it's always nice when good things happen to good people.

Yes, in the WTA she's the best ever comeback but some male player also appeared in 19th on ranks after retirement but it was a long time ago.

Justine Henin will return to professional tennis in 2010!
The Belgian annouced on television that she will make a return, despite 'definitively' ending her career on 14 May 2008.
So two of Belgium's best ever players will be back on the WTA Tour next year. Great news for women's tennis.

Aye aye, what's going on here? Lisicki's got a glint in her eye but Davydenko doesn't seem that interested.

Domestic bliss, either that or a photo shoot for sponsors.

Authorities looking into WTA match

Associated Press
LONDON -- Tennis authorities are looking into a WTA Tour match involving U.S. Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki that apparently sparked bettors to pile money on her opponent when she was on the verge of losing in straight sets.

Wozniacki, a 19-year-old Dane ranked sixth in the world, retired from the first-round match at the Luxembourg Open with a hamstring injury on Wednesday while leading Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 7-5, 5-0.

"So, people bet on my matches. Some win, others lose. I just know that I am clean," Caroline Wozniacki said.
Wozniacki's father, Piotr, told his daughter at 3-0 in the second set to retire before winning because her injury would prevent her from playing in the next round. His comments, apparently spoken in his native Polish, were picked up by microphones and heard by viewers watching the match on the Internet.

"I went onto the court and said to her: 'Caro, it does not matter whether it's going to be 5-0, 4-1 or 3-2. You can not play the next round, so you shouldn't take the risk," Piotr Wozniacki said Thursday on Danish radio. "I'm very proud of Caroline, because she stopped the fight and gave her opponent a chance."

The father's comments during the match led to a surge in online bets for Kremer to win.

The governing bodies of tennis created a Tennis Integrity Unit last year to combat gambling and match-fixing.

"We're just looking into everything that happened in this match," WTA spokesman Neil Robinson said, adding that he believed the information would go to the integrity unit. "I would think that would be the way it would go. They are aware of it."

Jankovic edged out Zvonareva for the final spot in the YEC today. Maybe it's just me wanting tennis to be more like my other favorite sports, baseball and football, but I really get into the race to the championships. Unfortunately, to the WTA, ATP and especially establishment media, the only things that matter are the 4 Grand Slams. Which is too bad since the YEC rewards a whole season of good play and not someone getting hot for two weeks. Personally, my favorite and proudest moment as a Daniela fan was her incredible run to reach the YEC in 2007 down the stretch drive, culminating in her victory at Linz.

By the way, how much different would Vera Zvonareva's career be if she had gotten some breaks with her health?
