Mel South will play Meng Yuan for a place in the quarter-finals (today, at 21:00 BST).
The Brit now has a really good draw, with no seeded players left in her quarter. However, the likes of Mattek (who beat Vaidisova) and Govortsova (who beat Hantuchova) will be tough opposition for the Brit if she were to get past Yuan (WTA 122), who defeated Mirza in the second round.
I think Melanie has a good chance of a win today. Could turn out to be a break-through week for the Brit.

Unfortunately Melanie lost today against Meng Yuan. A dissapointing result in the sense that this was a great opportunity to get to a Tier II quarter-final for the first time, playing an opponant who spends most of her time on the ITF tour (like Mel). Still a good week though considering the Brit lost in qualifying on the weekend. And beating Kvitova in round 2 will certainly boost her confidence.
Melanie will take away 40 ranking points from this week, and a pay cheque for $7,460, which is alot in comparison to what she is used to taking away from a week of tennis.

Anne Keothavong is into the Montreal Tier I main draw. She will play the number 13 seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia in round 1:
1R - Maria Kirilenko[13] 6-1 7-5
2R - Stephanie Dubois[WC]
3R - Jelena Jankovic[2]
QF - Dominika Cibulkova
SF - Marion Bartoli[10]
F - Dinara Safina[7]

A tough draw for Anne once again, but there is always hope against Kirilenko, especially since she is just returning from a hard-court tournament in Europe and will therefore not have much preparation time in the US. Could be an interesting match.

There are also Brits in the qualifying draw. Katie O'Brien seeded 11 and Melanie South seeded 12. Both have good draws, facing wildcards in the first round, and should make it through to the main draw. If they do, it is likely they will have an easier main draw than Anne, since many of the qualifying places have been drawn against relatively easy first round opponants.
Katie's qualifying draw is show below:

1R - Danielle Mills[WC] 6-4 6-3
2R - Chanelle Scheepers[18] 6-3 4-6 6-3

Mel's qualifying draw:
1R - Elianne Douglas-Miron[WC] 6-0 6-1
2R - Alina Jidkova[23] 3-6 6-3 6-4

Looks like we will see more British success this week on the US hardcourts.

British number 5 Sarah Borwell has entered the qualifying draw for the Nordea Nordic Light Open in Stockholm, Sweden (a WTA Tier IV event). She will face the top seed in the first round of the qualifying draw:
1R - Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1 6-2
2R - Sophie Lefevre

Melanie South is into the main draw in Montreal:
1R - Marion Bartoli[10] 6-3 6-7[5] 6-0
2R - Alisa Kleybanova
3R - Anna Chakvetadze[6]
QF - Ai Sugiyama
SF - Dominika Cibulkova
F - Dinara Safina[7]

Both Brits lose in the main draw first round but not without a fight. Nice to see South take a set off Bartoli but the Frenchwoman was suffering from a stomach problem that has affected many players this week in Montreal.
The next step for South and O'Brien is qualifying for the US Open. I'm sure Baltacha will also be into the qualifying draw for the Open, and of course Anne Keothavong will get direct entry into the main draw.

Well the qualie draws for the two brits are decent, helped by the seeding and both should consider this a good chance to make the main draw of a tier I, as for Keothavong hopefully she will be able to bounce back from last weeks dissapointment but Kirilenko can be vulnerable and is liable to be defeated by people lower down the ranks than her, Errani last week in Portoroz a prime example so Anne should go into that match with alot of hope, if she gets through then she will have another similar match up in the 2nd round and could have another good week here and bump her ranking up even further

Two brtis in the main draw, cant complain about that, did expect O'Brien to get past scheepers who i have never in my life heard of and ive heard of pretty much everyone inside the top 200, but nevermind, does look like their friends though cause they are playing doubles together lol anyway, South has got herself a tough draw getting paired with Bartoli when there was so many better options on the other side of the draw but its a good chance to test herself and hopefully pull off an upset

hmmm, 0-2 for the brits here, expected though, tough draws for them both, but good achievement from South to make the main draw, and take a set off bartoli
