Mel South crashed out of the qualifiers for LA quite convincingly last night, and cant really say i was a surprised considering that, something i only found out after i posted last night, that the person she scraped past in the 1st round, was a college player without a world ranking

Scott

Yes, I noticed she didn't have a ranking. So quite a poor scoreline for South really, just scraping through to the second round of qualifying.

Katie O'Brien is in action against Pironkova in Portoroz. A really tight match with lots of momentum swings. O'Brien leads 7-6[6] 4-6 3-2 with a break.

-O'Brien holds serve and gets a two game lead, 4-2 final set.

-O'Brien breaks again, the third time this set, now leads 5-2. Surely the match is hers.

Katie is through to round two, where she will face Vera Dushevina, beating Tsvetana Pironkova 7-6[6] 4-6 6-2.
She is now 2-0 up against Pironkova in career meetings.

Great win for Katie, against a much higher ranked player than herself. Good luck in the next round

Despite the prospect of Zvonareva in the next round it was still a good draw for Anne to get Craybas but unfortunately she wasn't able to capitalize on it. Shes 1 place away from her target in the top 75 but will need to wait another week for that. Hopefully she will be able to get into Montreal next week.

On paper Anne was expected to beat Craybas. I guess that illustrates the huge leap in the rankings Anne has taken over the past few months.

Two Brits have experienced doubles success in Portoroz.

Round 1

Sarah Borwell and her partner Courtney Nagle beat the number 2 seeds Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska 6-1 3-6 10-7, whilst Amanda Elliott and Xinyun Han beat Slovenian wildcards Tina Obrez and Anja Prislan 5-7 6-2 10-1.

Quarter-finals

Bychkova/Manasieva d. Borwell/Nagel 6-4 6-2

Martinez Sanchez/Parra Santonja[4] d. Elliott/Han 6-2 6-1
A one-sided match in the quarter-finals, but nice to see Elliott competing on the WTA tour and winning a match, despite being outplayed in this round.

Mel South, who lost in the final round of qualifying, is into the main draw of Los Angeles due to Serena Williams withdrawel on Tuesday. As a result she has obtained a bye in round 1 and will now face Petra Kvitova on Wednesday in round 2 (Court 3, 19:00 BST). Below is her draw:
1R - BYE
2R - Petra Kvitova 6-4 6-2
3R - Meng Yuan 6-2 6-3
QF - Bethanie Mattek[WC]
SF - Ai Sugiyama
F - Jelena Jankovic[1]

This is a great opportunity for Mel, and Kvitova is definately a player she has a good chance against. However, on the basis of her qualifying results, she didn't seem to play particularly well last weekend, only just beating an unranked player to get through to round two of qualifying. Hopefully she has trained well these past few days and will relish this opportunity which could put her into the thrid round of a Tier II for the first time.

Katie O'Brien has just lost in the second round of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open.

V.Dushevina d. K.O'Brien 6-3 6-2.

A fairly poor scoreline for Katie in the second round, but at least she was able to win another match in a WTA tour event in the first round against a much higher-ranked opponant.

First set to South in the 2nd round of LA. The lucky loser taking her change at the moment, a 3rd round appearance in LA would be a massive boost to her confidence and her ranking, but still a long way to go. First set 6-4 to South

South is a break up once again in the second set. Now leads 6-4 *3-2.
I hope she can close this out in two sets.

South wins 6-4 6-2.

After just scraping past a college player, losing to a lower seed than her convincingly in the qualifiers, Britains Melanie South finds herself in the 3rd round of a Tier II event lol Their not called lucky losers for nothing, well done Melanie for taking your change. Next up is the winner of Sania Mirza or Meng Yuan
